Oil to gas conversion

Thinking of changing from oil to gas?

Check gas availability, then plan the boiler, meter connection, heating changes and safe decommissioning of the oil setup.

Start with your building

Confirm the gas connection before planning the heating work.

WRB starts by confirming whether your property in the Republic of Ireland can connect to a local gas network. We then look at the boiler, meter position, pipework, hot water, controls and what should happen to the oil tank.

We start with what you know about the property or site, your current setup, how you use energy and what you want to improve. That helps us recommend equipment for a clear reason.

What a good plan should help you do

  • Confirm gas availability before spending time on a detailed design
  • Understand which parts of the heating system can stay and which need to change
  • Coordinate the network connection, heating work and oil-system decommissioning

What we need to know

01Your Eircode and confirmation from the local gas network
02The oil boiler, tank, cylinder, radiators, controls and current fuel use
03Possible gas-meter and boiler locations, pipe routes, flue, drainage and access

You do not need every detail before getting in touch. Share what you know and we’ll tell you what matters next.

Check the gas network first

Natural gas is not available at every property in the Republic of Ireland. The local network needs to confirm whether a connection is possible and where the meter can go before the heating conversion is finalised.

Separate the connection from the heating work

The gas network normally handles the service connection and meter. A Gas Safe registered engineer handles the gas boiler and heating work. A clear plan shows who is responsible for each part and when it will happen.

Plan what happens to the oil system

The boiler, tank, remaining fuel and oil line need a safe plan. Depending on the site, the tank may be removed, made safe or dealt with separately. This should be agreed before work starts.

Compare the whole change, not one headline

Running costs depend on energy prices, the new system, controls and how you use the home. We focus on the practical scope, total cost and likely day-to-day change instead of promising a fixed saving.

Common questions

Can every home change from oil to gas?

No. Your property needs to be close enough to a live gas network and the network operator must confirm that it can connect.

Will all my radiators and pipes need to change?

Not necessarily. Their condition, size and layout need to be checked, but suitable parts of the existing heating system may be retained.

What happens to the oil tank?

The survey should record the tank, any remaining fuel and access. The proposal then explains whether removal, decommissioning or separate specialist work is needed.

Will gas definitely cost less to run?

No fixed saving can be promised. Running cost depends on changing fuel prices, the boiler and controls, the home’s heat demand and how the household uses heating and hot water.
